Roses[edit]

Wow. Nice roses. Thanks! James F. (talk) 12:38, 16 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I hope you don't mind (:-)), but I've nominated a couple that stood out for Featured Picture status. See Commons:Featured pictures candidates.

I’ll upload stamps related to Soviet space programs and a little bit of socialistic realism for now :-) --EugeneZelenko 14:28, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Stamp scanning[edit]

Unless you know more about philately than I do, you should have asked me, or used the talk page, instead of simply deleting my wording in Category:Stamps. I could easily be setting all the records for commons file sizes just by scanning a large cover at 2400dpi, but it's simply pointless; there is no additional information to be had. Stan Shebs 13:14, 23 May 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Stan. Please note that being bold is considered a virtue here. The edit that I made was not at all out of the ordinary. As for "setting all the records for commons file sizes", this is impossible: there is an 8 megabyte size limit, and there are lots of 8 megabyte images already. Also, please see Commons:Criteria for inclusion which indicates that images should be uploaded at the "highest resolution available". Cheers, Dbenbenn 19:49, 23 May 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Simply deleting knowledgeable people's carefully-worded advice, and replacing with bad advice, is not considered a virtue at all however. An 8.5 x 11 cover scanned at 2400dpi is 1.5GB in raw form, so somebody following your "bold" advice would quickly run afoul of the 8MB upload limit. I'm amenable to discussion of recommendations, which I added because so many people were uploading tiny scans, however there is no point in me writing a better recommendation if you're just going to mindlessly delete it every time. Stan Shebs 02:58, 24 May 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's a good point about large scans going over the upload limit; I updated the text at Category:Stamps to reflect that.
I don't understand why you think I'm "going to mindlessly delete it every time". I modified some text that you had written; that's how Wikipedia works. Dbenbenn 03:25, 24 May 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm certain you know full well that deleting is not just "modifying some text" - try deleting half of a policy page on en:, see how many minutes before it's reverted, you're desysopped, and sent up in front of the AC for vandalism. So please don't insult my intelligence by lecturing me on "how Wikipedia works"; it's going to be a long time before you've contributed as much to WP as I have. Since this "discussion" is going nowhere, I'm just going to do my thing, and revert your edits as I see fit. Stan Shebs 06:59, 24 May 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Please remember to assume good faith, Stan. This conversation might have been more pleasant for both of us if you had done that from the beginning. I honestly don't understand why you are so unhappy with me. Anyway, if we bump into each other in the future, I hope it works out better. Dbenbenn 15:48, 24 May 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"Centrosema virginianum"[edit]

Hello Stan! Please, reconsider Image:Centrosema virginiana.jpg for which you created Centrosema virginianum. I know that you are very familiar with plants. So I was wondering that you did not see that this one is mis-identified. Centrosema is a twining plant with three-foliolate leaves. I suppose that the plant shown in the photo is some species of Lycium. Centrosema probably was growing there sometimes before, but it has gone. Do you have an idea which species of Lycium this could be? Cheers --Franz Xaver 14:19, 24 May 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Policy for plant and animal stuff[edit]

Hi Stan! That's good news. I wished to have some general policy for biological objects. Even if it should be difficult to find some consensus, it is better to discuss on a general policy than to discuss every single action - the latter with different results depending on who is concerned. Awaiting your draft. Greetings from Vienna. --Franz Xaver 11:50, 25 May 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello again! I have tried to determine the plants on your images, using USDA Plants database, CalPhotos, Calflora, the key from Jepson Manual, and Google image search. (Of course Las Vegas is not in California, but it is not too far from the border.) Now I am quite sure that your tentative determination as Sphaeralcea ambigua is correct. According to USDA, eight species of Sphaeralcea are occurring in Nevada. Some have very narrowly dissected leafs, others according to CalFlora are growing at higher elevation in mountains with less dry climate. S. angustifolia has different leaves, too. So the only alternative, probably, is S. emoryi. However, based on the key characters in Jepson Manual and the photos in CalPhotos I came to the conclusion that your photos do not show S. emoryi. I would even go further and say that Image:Globemallow-600px.jpg shows S. ambigua var. ambigua (open panicle, red-orange petals) and Image:Sphaeralcea sp 1.jpg is S. ambigua var. rugosa.
Anyway, your images should be deposited in a page named Sphaeralcea ambigua. I would prefer to move Sphaeralcea to this name and request speedy deletion for the redirect page, as the genus page should not be redirected to a species page. However, there are discussions ... So I do not want to make another faux pas. Would you prefer to create Sphaeralcea ambigua as a new and additional page and have both this and Sphaeralcea side by side? Cheers --Franz Xaver 18:43, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I've been reluctant to try to make a species id, because the genus is notorious for intermediate versions - some locals say that they can only be reliably distinguished by fruit characters. I must have walked by a thousand specimens this spring (they are quite common), and there is quite a bit of variation in leaf characters from one plant to the next. In May I started taking more careful pictures including leaves and panicles, in hopes of having something more reliably identifiable, but my spring total is up to about 9,000 pics, and my uploading is only as far as early March. There are still some Sphaeralcea in bloom in the mountains above 2,000 meters, they are almost certainly S. ambigua. So how about giving me a week to see if I can come up with pictures that can definitely be assigned to the species? Stan Shebs 21:58, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)
OK, there is no reason to hurry. Anyway, I like the colour of the flowers, even if there is no definite species id. --Franz Xaver 23:22, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello,

Thank for your message. I had to make a bad handling. I do not remember to have had a message of alarm for creation of my new page. Curious. I correct that.

Public domain stamps[edit]

Hi Stan. I tagged Image:Stamp Canada 1942 1c.jpg as {{Unknown}}. Is there any reason to think the stamp is public domain? If all Canadian stamps are public domain, it might be a good idea to create a special template saying so. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 05:44, 10 August 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Israeli stamps copyright[edit]

Hi Stan. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge about it. After I discovered Category:Stamps, I made a (silly) assumption that it supersedes [1]. I guess now we delete them here and I'll upload them into Wikipedia using that good old template? Thanks much for catching this. Humus sapiens 07:28, 1 September 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]

External and interwiki links for categories, articles and images[edit]

Hi, Stan! I wonder if you would be kind enough to take a look at the discussion under the heading Cinder Cone on my talk page. Perhaps you could tell us where we might join a relevant discussion, or start one, e.g., a project talk page? BTW, you might enjoy the Winthrop Glacier image. Thanks, Stan. In September, I read that discussion when I was trying to understand the use of categories and gallery pages for organizing articles. I think your proposal is a good idea. Why don't you put it on a new Commons page and link it appropriately, so that people can find it? We'll move our discussion to its talk page. I'll volunteer to edit Commons:First steps for consistency, if you like. Best wishes, Wsiegmund 18:31, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Voyager-bottom.jpg[edit]

Thanks for the info. I feel this field is too complicated for me. None of the offered licenses on Commons does obviously correspond with the information you get when you inspect an image from e. g. the English WP. I think it is an easy task, to check the license automatically (by the uploading tool) when the URL of the image in the English WP is provided by the uploading person. Just the URL should suffice. After pressing submit, the software should automatically check the license of the source and - if it is ok - should grab the source directly. However, I am sure, I am not the first one who discovered this. BTW, some of my uploaded pictures have been deleted without a note: You were the first who notified me. Category:Fish structuring[edit]

Hi Stan,

I saw a note by you on a talk page about fish, and I know you're familiar with this "tree of life" stuff, so I was wondering if you might be able to help me.

I've been working with a user who has gained permission to upload a bunch of fish drawings (see his gallery). I would like to tag and categorise them all just once, and obviously this would be a good opportunity to put them into species categories.

But what level...? OK, for Image:Bathystethus cultratus (Grey knifefish).gif, I can go look up and see w:Grey knifefish is in Category:Perciformes which appears to be at the "order" level. (Thank God for taxoboxes.) Is that also what we do here, or do we go to family or genus level, or something else?

Thanks if you can help! pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:54, 29 March 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

a filled-out fish section will have mostly species as gallery-type pages sitting in family categories -- well, that is more information than Commons:WikiProject Tree of Life could offer me, and that's exactly what I wanted to know. WPToL says Major groups should be given their own categories. What is a "group"?! How does one decide what a "major group" is? Not really useful, especially to the casual categoriser who would like to comply with the project but doesn't have X years of biology behind them. And please use the new template for tagging: Note: please replace this template with {{no license|month=April|day=1|year=2006}} to categorize by tag date.-- skINMATE 07:30, 1 April 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

USS Maine revert[edit]

actually, on the USS Maine article, the IP ID'd change you reverted was me (I timed out and didn't realize it). Anyhow, I transcluded the transwikis into the article. It makes it look a lot more busy, so maybe that is not what the article folks want. I figured it would increase chances of search hits from google, but I am not especially clear on the goals people have for articles. -Mak 19:07, 3 April 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sorry, the diff listing made it look like everything was being mangled. Anyway, my working principle is that commons pages are like skeleton WP articles - minimal text (1-2 sentences per language), the images, and then boilerplate like categorization and interwiki exactly parallel to the WP articles. The theory is that this makes it equally easy to find images for articles and articles for images; either interwiki link goes direct to/from commons, or go up to a category, use the cat's interwiki to get to language WP/commons, look in cat for relevant material. If we're careful about parallelism, then we can eventually set bots to work keeping things consistent; there are thousands of images going unused in the various WPs because nobody even knows they're available. Stan Shebs 21:27, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
I didn't know if you watched my page so just moved everything here. OK- I'm all for making things uniform enough that the bots or templates can do a lot of this work. Big question on bots versus templates. Theoretically I like bots better but it seems like there will be some practical problems with them making mistakes. I wonder if they interoperate well with templates and there can be a mixed solution to this problem of updating. To this end, I have been experimenting with using categories as templates. The advantage is that there is a logical and commonly browsed location for storing template transwiki text which can be associated with orphanned images that have very little text. The problem I see with this is that occisionally elements do not belong with instance objects and novices are not going to understand the implications of when to put something inside a Noinclude or includeonly ane when not to. I suppose this could be made more explicit by using templates in both the category and the images, but that will make it even more opaque to novices.
Maybe the best solution is just to stick the trans and interwiki stuff in the category, then subst it in and edit out the junk. That means bots would have to do the updates.
Not just novices it's opaque to :-) - I'm not even sure what problem you're trying to solve, let alone what "categories as templates" is supposed to mean! Stan Shebs 22:57, 3 April 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Stan[edit]

Thanks for your help. I'm new to wikipedia, so bear with me. I'd like to upload some low-resolution thumbnails of Time Magazine covers for an article--an alumni page of the individuals on the cover. As far as I could research the subject within wickipdia there apparently was a pretty contentious discussion on the matter. As far as I could tell, the final resolution was that, with proper tagging, the images did fall under "fair use" doctrine. In fact, there was a specific template created for Time Magazine covers. If this is correct, what necessary tagging and "fair use" explanation do I need to attach to a Time Magazine cover--to prevent its deletion--before using it in an article? Thanks in advance for any help you might add.--Sam Harmon 06:00, 6 May 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Map of museum ships[edit]

You know, some of these photos you did at the museum ships are great. Roman Roads rename proposal[edit]

Personally, I think occaisional visitors at Commons will use the term "Roman" just as much or more than Rome in a query, so I don't care much about this one. Only problem is, I can't prove my intuition of what the statistics are. I am inclined have the scheme state the principle that a conversion should not be made for cases where the adjectival form is as common or more common as a search query than the noun form.

Without any further comment, my bot would decline to touch any of the Roman categories. If someone wants to get pedantic about it in the future and try to change the catnames, they can argue the case. I personally don't think it is very important to change any of the Roman XXXX categories.

How does that sound? -Mak 00:00, 4 July 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello Stan Shebs,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Ok, now it is clear for me. So i am leaving my work (categorizing) in Onagraceae family category, focusing on image descriptions. Regards, Michau Sm 03:08, 20 July 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Camissonia brevipes 1.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thanks for your reminder about the copyright on this image. It looks like you have already changed the copyright listing so I will assume all is O.K. now unless I hear otherwise.

Genus categories[edit]

Hi, re Category:Crassula, we don't want every species in both family and genus, it make the family categories too large, and you also lost the genus cat sort, which is useful to find a species when a genus cat gets large. Stan Shebs 12:58, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I realized I had done that by mistake and was going to go back and correct the mistake, as well I have to put in the Header information for the new articles that had Genus and species etc above the pics. I will be doing that soon. Is that what you meant by the cat sort ? WayneRay 13:12, 25 July 2006 (UTC)WayneRayReply[reply]
I corrected things and will work on the header stuff asap WayneRay 14:34, 26 July 2006 (UTC)WayneRayReply[reply]

PD-stammp[edit]

It is not my task to look through the change history of all images that used the template {{PD-stamp}}. The point is, that the template is useless and a new license has to be applied to all images. That is your task. --ALE! 07:17, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Come on and get down a little bit. The description page was not blanked by nobody but was perfectly fine with a license template and everything. The template was deleted as the result of the discussion on the deletion requests page. Consequently your stamps do not have a license any more and it is the responsability of the user to give us a new valid license.
We had stamps from Ucraine and Guam using the template, how should I now the correct license? And if found a license in the history, how should I know, that it was a valid license. Also fellow admins can fail choosing the correct license tag. --ALE! 18:46, 2 August 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi. I do not know if you are aware of this image facing deletion. I know you presented fair arguments that this image is "most likely" PD because copyright was not renewed. Although I am sure that you have a point, it is difficult for me -- and others -- to validate, and I intend to delete the image. If you can provide actual evidence that it is not copyrighted, the image can be restored.

Vigeland park[edit]

Hi again.

I'm now in the process of deleting some of your images of the Vigeland Sculpture Park, as per the discussion on the deletion request (I also asked on the mailinglist by the way, no-one approved of keeping them). However, the images are useful, so I think you should upload them as "fair use" onto English Wikipedia.

PD-ItalyGov up for deletion.[edit]

  • The folks who claim the EU harmonization directive makes it illegal for governments to expire copyrights prior to 70 years pma have proposed that the PD-ItalyGov template be deleted.

Just wanted you to know I've blocked Tapia 06 95, whom you warned, for 24 hours, with a warning of longer or permanent block if the problems continue. Several images marked as fair use on en: were uploaded and tagged with free licenses today. I also tracked down all the images on en: and deleted after confirming that they were all tagged as fair use there. Cnyborg 22:29, 18 September 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Stan,

You have helped me once, so I want to ask You once more.

This is small part of an old book (printed 1599) . I found the scan of this book in the internet. As far as I know, please correct me, if I am not right, the rights for this book cannot be claimed by anybody, the same is with a scan or copy. So, I took a very small part of this book an removed some pixels and so on. Of course, I don't want to reserve any rights for this work. What is the apropriate licence. Please give me the right templete (I am still a newbie).

Ps. I have already asked WarX, but there is still no answer.

Taxonomy[edit]

Hi. I have been having some difficulty with Aizoaceae because Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town still prefers the family Mesembryanthemaceae. However, I have been putting them in Aizoaceae because that is what it seems the community and the world in general prefer. My next problem is Avonia What follows below comes from Cites. I see you have put pics in Anacampseros' which is synonomous with Avonia. How do we agree on common nomenclature and redirect synonamus names or outdated names to the agreed plant catagories?

Any thoughts? At present I haven't uploaded the Avonia / Anacampseros while awaiting consensus. Regards Andrew massyn 19:56, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply[reply]
From CITES:
  • Order : CARYOPHYLLALES
  • Family : PORTULACACEAE
  • Genus : Avonia
  • Taxon : Avonia quinaria (E.Meyer ex Fenzl) Rowl.
  • Synonym : Anacampseros quinaria

Hello,

whats wrong with Image:AWT at OS X.png? It just shows many of the Mac OS X widgets used by (open source) Java AWT. You see there's an equal screenshot made on windows. If this screenshot should be deleted, whats with Category:Mac OS X? For instance, take a look at Image:Scribus-1.3-Mac.png, Image:Azureus 2.5.0.0 screenshot.png or even Image:VLC-0.8.5-Mac.jpg. These screenshots show highly more Mac OS X elements than my simple picture.

Image:Souvenir Steet[edit]

Dear Mr. Shebs, you wrote:

Does the professor own the design, and not the Bulgarian Posts? Corporations tend to keep copyrights for themselves.

The background of that image is as follows. It is an image made by Prof. Todor Vardjiev, and published here with his approval. The image depicts a souvenir sheet published by the Bulgarian Posts and designed by Prof. Vardjiev too. The design of the souvenir sheet would be owned by the Bulgarian Posts (the fact that the Bulgarian Posts do not possess the copyright of the five photographs directly incorporated in the design is irrelevant I presume).

If you believe that image is usable in the Commons under some license, then please let me know what should be done. If not, please feel free to delete it right away.

I would appreciate also your competent advice on the possibility of using that image in the English or other particular Wikis; there seem to exist certain copyright specifics as far as post stamps are concerned. Best, Apcbg 18:35, 14 January 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Many thanks for your clarification and advice. I shall talk to some responsible postal people on the matter of possible authorization for the use of that design here under one of the acceptable free licenses, and inform you of the results; could you please recommend which particular variety might appear more acceptable for them, judging from precedents (if any)? (I am not well acquainted with the Wikipedia system of licenses, and the postal people may or may not know more about them.) As a matter of fact those photographs had not been licensed to the postal services (the pictures are mine) but anyway. Thanks for the advice on fair use in the English Wikipedia. Best, Apcbg 17:55, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sincere thanks! I'll be trying. Best, Apcbg 22:18, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dear Stan, could you advise please if that image could be uploaded in the English Wiki? In the Bulgarian Wiki it is tagged as being "in the public domain in countries like Bulgaria and the USA where copyright expires 70 years or less after the death of the photographer". Apcbg 20:12, 17 February 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I asked bg:user Miko Stavrev who uploaded the picture in the first place, and he advised that it was taken from the Almanac Macedonia in images, published in Sofia in 1919. He has no further information regarding the origins of the picture; what is certain is that it must have been taken before the First Balkan War i.e. before 1912. Thuja, etc.[edit]

Yeah, it's somthing of an experiment, but I think it's showing promise...just working in Cupressaceae right now, since it's a relatively small family and so I can work out the kinks easier. It needs some refinement in the gallery part though... I'm hoping to find (or if not just make) some very simplified drawings to represent leaves, flowers, bark, stems, buds, etc. so that the gallery parts can be labeled "non-linguistically" by the aspects highlighted in the image. I'd like to do something with the taxonav template as well, but I'm not fond of either of the current versions (the "taxobox" model might be better, since it promts you to add the various taxonomical levels, rather than having to put them in manually every time).

One nice thing about it is that I've noticed a couple of the pages I did that way growing in "either direction", i.e. someone can add an image to either the category or the gallery according to their own preference or "tradition" from their home wiki. It also ensures that anyone searching can find the page either through category or word search.

Good to know someone's watching :). Any thoughts on it? --SB_Johnny|talk|books 16:45, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Calylophus lavandulifolius vs Oenothera lavandulifolia[edit]

Hi Stan, please check this URL: Onagraceae The Evening Primrose Family which gives the most actual treatment of Onagraceae. And based on phylogeny. Check also out papers in PDF given there and a list of taxa. Genus Calylophylus is not listed there, and Oenothera lavandulifolia is listed. Of course prof. P.H. Raven IS an authority, but consider that his taxonomical treatment was created over 50 years ago. Regards, Michau Sm 07:43, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This site is good, maybe have some short problems. Check it in a few days. This is not only the website, it shows results of taxonomical research published in many scientific papers. Some of them are placed in this website in PDF's. Scientific team which made this site, many of them are authorities in Onagraceae taxonomy, some are from Raven's old team. And there is no need to distinguish genus Calylophus according to their research results. C. lavandulifolius is a synonyme of O. lavandulifolia, kindly regards, Michau Sm 08:53, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oh, crap.[edit]

Walk in the door, look to your left, and there, in the bed is the Amborella. You have to look for the signs to figure out which one it is, but you should be able to recoginize its ruffled leaves right away--that's what caught my eye, I'd just been reading about it, saw they had one, and saw the ruffled leaves. It's short, just a few feet high, with long branches of a couple of feet, and the leaves are maybe 4 inches long, but it's toward the front of the planting bed, and right inside the door on the left, just a few feet from the front wall of the greenhouse. However, if you go back and meet with their expert, have him point out the Austrobaileyales also. I can't wait to see what you got, they have a great assortment of rare plants there. KP Botany 04:42, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Were you in the tropical house? I don't remember there being a lot of ferns there, except for on the wall with the door, the Amborella, though, is in the bed proper to the left of the door, not on the wall. Anyway, let me know if you hit paydirt. KP Botany 05:38, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's been a while since I was there, but the tropical house is the big greenhouse down the hill from the entrance and it sounds like you were in the little tiny greenhouse across from the cactus and succulent collections to the left as you first enter the garden. If you walked in the gate and turned left and walked past the big greenhouses, then turned righ to the little tiny house, you were not in the right place. If you entered the garden and headed straight down the hill with the California Natives on your right, then went across the bridge, and turned right past the conference center down to the tall old greenhouse that has been at the garden for ages, then went in its doors, and looked to the left you could see the Amborella. KP Botany 01:15, 18 April 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The garden's not well signed, and it's hard to know what's what without asking people, and oftentimes their staff is not very helpful. Get one of their maps or download it off their website and look for the Tropical House next time you are there. KP Botany 02:19, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Stan. I think your pics of Chasmanthe floribunda are actually Chasmanthe aethiopica.I have uploaded a pic of what I think is floribunda to compare. According to Manning & Goldblatt Colour Encyclopaedia of Cape bulbs, the stem of aethiopica is unbranched and the plants are 40 - 65 cm high. Floribunda on the other hand is taller, 45 - 100 cm and usually branched. The flowers of aethiopica are "in a secund, inclined to horisontal spike" whereas those fo floribunda are "in a two ranked erect spike". Please let me know what you think. Best wishes. Mine pixelized a lot when it is not intaglio stamps. Do you have any idea/advice on how to perfect scanning or to enhance picture after scanning, please? Have a nice Spring. Sebjarod 12:57, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I suggest scanning at a higher resolution and making sure that the jpeg compression setting is not set to anything other than maximum, if your scanner can do that. A 239kb file is not very big. Cheers Ww2censor 01:19, 11 May 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I fear the problem is elsewhere (quality of my scanner, of the software), because I did the same stamp scan in 1200dpi and I always save as jpg 100% quality. Grrrr... I know what I need to look for next Christmas :) Sebjarod 10:48, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't know what's going on with the image. Mine is a 2400 dpi Epson, but this stamp I scanned at 1200 dpi, then processed in Photoshop LE, basically just resizing (I do that to factor out scanning artifacts and noise), and contrast enhancement. For typographed stamps I usually do edge sharpening too, but for litho and intaglio it doesn't seem to be a win. Sebjarod, your images here look like they've been heavily smoothed, whether as jpeg compression or because the scanner wanted to. I would look at scanner settings, and try different jpeg qualities - maybe there's a bug where 100% is interpreted as 10%? Stan Shebs 14:04, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi,

Are you sure that the picture shows Polypterus weeksii not a Polypterus delhezi ? Polimerek 13:26, 9 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I've received an E-mail from a person who claims that this picture is wrongly labelled and it shows Polypterus delhezi. As I have no knowledge about it, I just asked you if you are sure that it shows Polypterus weeksii, as a person who took this picture :-) Polimerek 13:11, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Category:Stamps of Aden[edit]

hi there Stan, I am looking for more stamps of the sultanates of Aden and south Yemen, unfortunately so far there are only two, do you think it possible to upload much more, especially with portraits of the ruler and buildings such as Image:Stamp Aden Quaiti Shihr Mukalla 1942 2a.jpg and Image:Stamp Aden Kathiri Seiyun 1942 2.5a.jpg? thanks alot. Renaming Campsis[edit]

I'll try to explain:

Campsis radicans has tube shaped flowers with small lobes (petals), much shorter than the tube. The tube is striped yellow inside only. You can find a good example at [2]

Campsis grandiflora has funnel shaped flowers, larger lobes, as long as the tube, and the yellow striped throat spreads on to the lobes. [3]

Campsis ×tagliabuana is the hybrid with generally larger flowers than C. radicans, more like C. grandiflora in shape, but usually lacking the yellow markings on the lobes. I would guess your plant is the cultivar 'Madame Galen' wich has leaves with downy undersides. [4]

The hybrid is often confused with both the species.

More specified to separate the species:

CHARACTER TRAIT Campsis grandiflora Campsis radicans
Inflorescence panicles of 6-12 flowers, the central axis is unique even though panicle is often pendulous cymes or loose clusters of 4-12 flowers, up to 20 in cultivars, no central axis
Height/Vigor 15-20 ft. in gardens, less vigorous than C. radicans. That said, C. x tagliabuana can be quite a strong thing and confused with this species. 30-40 feet or more in gardens, more vigorous
Aerial roots aerial root attachments fewer or sparse aerial root attachments ("hold fasts') very numerous once established (5-10+ years)
Corolla shape open, funnelform (funnel-shaped) closed, tubular and elongated
Corolla width 2-3 in. wide at opening 0.75-1.5 in. wide at opening, occasionally larger in cultivars but never to 2-3 inches wide.
Bloom time spring, seldom repeating in fall as C. radicans and the better clones may wish to do. spring, sometimes reblooming lightly in fall.
Leaf vestituture below glabrous at all times pubescent at first below, later pubescent near the viens below
Calyx lobes narrow, lanceolate lobes campanulate (bell-shaped) with triangular teeth
Cold hardiness USDA 6B - 7, thus rarely seen in Northeastern or Midwest US gardens USDA 4, thus available in most temperate gardens
Geography native to China, naturalized in Japan and elsewhere in Asia native to southeastern US, a potentially weedy species naturalized elsewhere

Hello Stan Shebs!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichill (talk) 13:05, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

On bots and templates[edit]

BotMultichill runs perhaps as an equal and opposite force against the destruction of categories. I once described the pasting of templates onto category and image pages as playing a wiki-version of paintball and the gallery makers started the virtual game like that.

Many many weeks of my work have recently been deleted. Did you know that there are several states of the United States which have no "plants of" category? I almost had every second level political division of the world plants, trees and other put into a "flora of" category and it is now more than half gone. Deleted by a person who communicates by deletion.

Look at the first time I learned about a tol group here: Link to a diff. All of the rest of the time it is just massive unannounced deletion and paintball like application of templates. How does a person fight that? I would rather have a different way to communicate than a paintball-like application of templates and an acknowledgment from the gallery enthusiasts that the fact that Category and Gallery can co-exist is a fact. I would rather be making articles at English wikipedia than galleries here, but that is my opinion and I do not need others to agree with me; especially given the fact that galleries and Categories can and do easily co-exist.

The problem is in the methods used to communicate by fellow gallery makers. It is almost too late to 'start' to communicate with me, btw; and the first thing that I heard that made sense here was that commons was for image hosting and the Encyclopedia wikis were for documentation.

The paintball war was initiated by the gallery people, it would be really nice to see that change. -- carol (talk) 16:00, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There is a suggestion that there needs to be a more public (not only via user talk pages) discussion of this problem here. Personally, I would like to know if the blocking of the bot expires before promised.... -- carol (talk) 00:53, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The gallery vs category debate has been going since Commons was set up. I personally prefer categories for some things, galleries for others, and rarely remove anything. I don't know anything about the removal of Flora categories, although it occurs to me that if the category itself had never been created (red link instead of blue), then it's likely somebody would have gone through images and pages and removed references to it - when I see a red-link category name, I tend to assume that it's a mistake of some sort, or that there has been a discussion and the category was deleted by consensus. If I want a category, I usually create it within seconds of referring to it from an image. Stan Shebs (talk) 12:27, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It doesn't take seconds to repopulate them. -- carol (talk) 12:41, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
These all existed as recently as this month. If there was a vote or a discussion of them, I was not invited. I have had several category that were emptied and a template put upon them for deletion as well. To write that a consensus is gotten before deletion sure looks good. Usually it is one user name that does this. Does one user make a consensus?
Thank you for responding, btw. -- carol (talk) 12:40, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is awkward talking about a consensus on a user page, and there is still the issue of the blocked bot which was emulating people from the TOL project (aggressively pasting templates until the message was gotten, an option for communication which was taken out of several options). Perhaps the bot can be unblocked or the discussion of the block and the way bots and people do things here should be taken to the Village Pump as has been suggested several times. -- carol (talk) 12:44, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Correction[edit]

Dear Admin Stan, One of the images on Wikicommons here at Image:Neferefre Abusir Pyramid.jpg has the wrong title. It should be Image:Neferirkare Abusir Pyramid.jpg Can you change the title to Neferirkare from Neferefre? (Neferefre and Neferirkare [Kakai]) were two separate Old Kingdom 5th Dynasty pharaohs. Its just a minor change. Thank You.

(I don't know how to sign my user name on Wikicommons since I don't see any signing tithes but its Leoboudv)

OK. I'll leave the image as is. The summary clarifies the identity of the king here. Thank You. User Leoboudv

Dear Stan, Can I ask one question please? Is there a reason why my WikiCommons account doesn't give me a signing tithe unlike my Wikipedia account? I have uploaded a few pictures without difficulty. Is it hidden somewhere on Wikimedia Commons? Thank You, User Leoboudv

On Wikipedia, when I edit an article, there is a small section at the bottom of the page page which says "Sign your username" with the signature to click on. This feature doesn't appear in my WikiCommons account. I thought perhaps it was relocated elsewhere for Wikicommons but I can't find any reference to it here. Just a little puzzled. Oh I just figured it out....you locate the your signature with timestamp click box at the top of the page instead of at the bottom like Wikipedia. As you can tell, I'm new here. It works Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:27, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image question[edit]

Dear Sir, I did not take or upload this image of Tut's face mask but I notice there are some copyright difficulties involved. May I just ask what is the problems with it: Image:Toetanchamon.jpg The meta data at the bottom says the photo was taken on January 1, 2002 in the Cairo Musum (where the mask is located) and it seems quite correct. Why? Because all photograph taking at the Cairo Museum was only banned in 2005 as this article notes. So, the photo was taken before the ban which implies the image is indeed legitimate. The author claims to have taken it himself. --Leoboudv (talk) 04:45, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Comment: Can't the 'warning' template be removed from the image. It really detracts from the image. Its a legitimate image of Tut's mask and several relevant categories have been added to corectly catalogue the image. The template was also generated by a bot, not a person. --Leoboudv (talk) 20:05, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Someone has removed the problematic template from the image, thank goodness. By the Way, since you have 120 articles on your talk page, you may consider (if you wish) doing some archiving. Just a suggestion. --Leoboudv (talk) 01:06, 24 July 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

a suggestion and a question[edit]

Try using the classic skin for a couple of weeks. Just try it and probably for the first few days, if you are used to another skin, it will seem awkward but after those first few days possibly a refreshed point of view can be obtained.

While I make this suggestion, I will be honest and admit that I was not able to function here for more than a few hours with the Mono skin (the default). The navigation via the category trees was painful not to have quick access to.

It is a suggestion only. I tried to intervene when I had the feeling that I was seeing young bored hackers attacking uploads but that article was deleted from English wikipedia. Recently, I have tried to intervene by requesting a bot that runs through galleries and puts a category of the same name on the image page; but that request has gone unanswered.

I am not intervening now, I am making a suggestion that may or may not change your point of view.

One of my fondest experiences here was about a couple of images I have of a plant from where I was living and wish I still were there. It was the first plant that I really researched to be certain that I identified it correctly. I put it into the correct category here -- they were not the best images of that species so I did not put them on the wikipedia article. I had been using the classic skin and rarely looked at galleries at that point.

A few months later, some user (I can name the user if necessary) removed the category from it and did not add it to the gallery.

You have been involved here for a long while -- perhaps you can explain what makes an environment like this exist? -- carol (talk) 14:23, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Don't discount the effects of different cultures. Acceptable behavior in Germany or France is rather different from acceptable behavior in the US, and with online interaction there's not even a physical milieu to set context. It's always weird to me to see a German casually writing something on a talk page that would earn a punch in the face if it was said in a US bar, and I'm sure I write things that bother people in other cultures. Plus there are a lot of participants of an age that tends to be thoughtless in the first place. For myself I just dial my expectations down and stay focussed on what's most important to me personally. Stan Shebs (talk) 15:10, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Interesting and I will think about that, however, my first online friendships were with Norwegians, Germans, a Spaniard and a couple of Mexicans. There were four people from United States. I think that you should not discount the media (movies and television for example) and allow the "cultural differences" to be an actual problem. If it is an actual problem, then it is one that has seemingly started recently which is not a natural order for these events and suggests that such justification is a crutch more than an actual reason. At least to me.
Further back in my pre-online history, I knew people from many cultures. South America, the Arabian Peninsula -- in fact by the time I was 25 years old I had met more people from Kenya than from New York and the people I knew from Tehran were actually more "culturally attuned" than me due to the access they had to cultural things when comparing a large city which they came from with the little suburban town I came from.
In my actual experiences, you are inventing a problem which simply does not exist. -- carol (talk) 15:34, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Perhaps, but you did ask for my thoughts. Stan Shebs (talk) 16:09, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

taxonomy navigation and templates[edit]

I recently tidied the category for Malvaceae and I should probably return and check my work there. They said at English Wikipedia (before I was blocked for reasons that I still simply do not understand) that Conquist doesn't use subfamilies but APGII does. The templates reflect this and I have not enough understanding of the problems to know where to verify that even.

Lets say that the information was incorrect. (I think that about) 20 templates would need to be altered to reflect this change for all of the hundreds of categories or galleries using them; and that could have been simplified more but I opted to make the templates so they could be managed with a finer degree.

I am almost finished with Asteraceae, I am inspired to get this done -- there were a few areas in the taxonomy which are not big branches or have no images for them here and I did not make templates for those. I need to make those templates now, however because of how I can so easily demonstrate the ease of creating new categories for the plant categories and galleries using these templates. Asteraceae subfamilies is an example of a category which I could make in just a few minutes here. It "violates" the nested taxonomy idea but it is also an interesting collection. The same thing for a category Asteraceae genera.

The constant either/or battle regarding category or gallery here is a brain eraser I think, with all due respect to the combatants. The things I outlined in the preceeding paragraph would work for any category or gallery using the templates. If either one of these is just using the taxonomy navigation template alone, it won't work.

The templates that I have made are at Category:Plant Navigation Templates. I am so not interested in any more seecat or uncat templates; how about seefunctioninghumansutilizingsoftware? -- carol (talk) 14:57, 23 July 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

OTRS[edit]

Dear Stan, I was checking the Commons OTRS web site and they say that I need the copyright holders permission to upload an image onto Commons. However, even if the copyright holder gives his/her permission (which I assume would be CC by SA by 3.0), the start of this form below must be filled out as follows:

"To permissions-commonswikimedia.org

I hereby assert that I am the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of WORK [ insert link ]"

What happens if the specific web link has 2 or more images on it like this? If you scroll through the web page, there are a total of 4 pictures on the web page but I want only the first one. Would 4 separate images be uploaded by me--or would I just upload the one I want (the first) and leave it at that? Secondly, as an Admin do you know the proper process of uploading an approved image (by the copyright holder) onto Commons? Do I upload the image, tag it as {{OTRS-pending}} and then wait until someone at Commons E-mails me--or will it be speedily deleted? E-mail the link with the newly downloaded picture together with the copyright's permission to the permissions E-mail address? I'm just lost here--what is the right step exactly? I'm sorry to ask you this question but its very specialised--something only an expert like you can answer.

As an Aside, is there a big difference between a CC by SA by 3.0 or a GDFL license? I'm assuming they both allow commercial free use but may be wrong. What I am getting at is what happens if the copyright owner asks me the difference.?

Dear Stan, I know you must be busy in your own personal life but if you have the time, please try to respond to my OTRS question. I already asked an Admin on Wikipedia this question and he told me to contact an Admin on Common. (someone like you) He was not familiar with Common procedures on OTRS. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 02:35, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Thanks Stan for the advice. I just e-mailed Hayter yesterday but have not received a reply (yet). Perhaps he is away or he will ignore my message. At any rate, as a good friend on Wikipedia told me--its better to try to get and get 50% of something rather than 100% of nothing. --Leoboudv (talk) 20:13, 7 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image:Stamp Greece large Hermes 5l.jpg[edit]

Thanks for puting it right. I saw the url reference to eBay in the discussion page. The source was not clear in the image page and the template was not accepted without a source entry, so I copied there the eBay link. Sv1xv (talk) 04:48, 5 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload over an inferior image[edit]

Dear Stan, I notice an inferior Commons image where the original uploader is not active anymore here here. Question: does Commons allow me to replace his/her image with a better one from me--or not? Meaning if the image is titled Xj.jpg, can I upload a new image with the same title Xj.jpg and replace/override the older inferior one. What is your opinion? Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:27, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Fate of images on a web site[edit]

Dear Stan,

  • As an Admin, you likely know that many images on WikiCommons comes from egyptarchive.co.uk created by Mr. Jon Bodsworth who gives this precise stmt on their copyright status: [5] Bodsworth says that he all his images are low resolution and copyright free with no restrictions on their use....but is not supporting his web site with new images anymore. What happens if one day his web site goes dead--it has happened to many web sites. A search on Commons shows 256 images from his web page alone (including the iconic image of Tut's mask--the very first image here) which all provide attribution to his web page. Will others start questioning the veracity of their copyright status on Commons? Or can an Admin like you archive Bodsworth's statement so that his images will not be questioned. Bodsworth's images are so important for many Wikipedia articles on Ancient Egypt because all photography in the Cairo Museum has been banned since 2005. There are few free images available today. I may sound paranoid but I feel it is better to be safe than sorry. Do you have any opinion here Mr Shebs? (PS: I have contacted Jon when I used his images and he replied that he is happy his images are of use to others.)

Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:23, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Stamp deletion request[edit]

You might want to look at Commons:Deletion requests/Stamps of Hervam. I cannot find anything about it in my reference material or even online. Can you? Ww2censor (talk) 17:40, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Cinderellas?[edit]

Hi Stan! Please look at Image:Jamoflasbela.jpg and Image:Jamsind.jpg. What are they? Cinderellas? Do you have any reliable information about their issuer, en:Jamot? If you have a link to such an information, please share it with me. Cheers, --Michael Romanov (talk) 18:13, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks a lot for your clarification. Regards, --Michael Romanov (talk) 05:48, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Image:Jamsind.jpg could only be a seal of Jám Feróz (1508 - 1527) who was the last ruler of the Samma dynasty of Sindh. It's not a stamp at all. --Michael Romanov (talk) 06:37, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Help[edit]

Dear Stan, Help! Can you please use your Admin tools and change the image title for this picture I uploaded to Commons from Image:Bronze Saite era piece of Egyptian cat in the Gulbenkina Museum1.jpg to 'Bronze Saite era piece of an Egyptian cat in the Gulbenkian Museum.jpg' ? I downloaded it late last night at 2 AM local Vancouver Time and made a major mistake here.

  • BTW, how did you know that S. Hayter would not 'give out' any images from his ancent-egypt web site as you predicted. That is exactly what happened. He posted some new photos in August on his web page when I contacted him but never once replied to my 2 E-mails on the pictures. Luckily, two people on flickr who were willing to help out with one or two pictures they took of the objects of the Egyptian king in question by amending the license for the Wikipedia article on this ruler. --Leoboudv (talk) 18:52, 9 September 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Images can't be renamed; just upload it under the name you want, and click on the "Nominate for deletion" link at the bottom of the sidebar for the old image. Stan Shebs (talk) 21:38, 9 September 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deletion or renaming request[edit]

Stan, Can you please rename this image as ThutmoseIII.jpg or delete it. It has sat on the deletion page for much too long. If not, can you please forward my message here to an Admin who deals with deletion or name change requests. I have no problem naming it ThutmoseIII.jpg. But it is not ThutmoseI.jpg! [6] Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 00:15, 10 September 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Dear Stan, I made an important comment on the image renaming article. You may wish to read it. The image is causing a whole bunch of confusion on non-English language sites: [7] Why doesn't an Admin just name it ThutmoseIII.jpg and end the confusion ASAP? --Leoboudv (talk) 10:12, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Dear Stan, Can you tell me how I upload a duplicate under pd-art for Image:ThutmoseI.jpg when no author or source is given? I was blocked from uploading a duplicate because I didn't know the source or author...This is the problem with uploading images from blacklisted sources like this: http://images.suite101.com/390585_com_thutmosei.jpg....no one knows where they got the original image from. Any ideas? Common's laws were more 'liberal' when the original image was uploaded. As for those other Wiki sites, I'll upload different images like this: Image:Karnak-obelisk-thoutmesI.jpg or Image:Stela of Tuthmosis I.jpg *Only one problem, a user on Dutch Wikipedia reverted my anon IP edit here (I don't have a page on Dutch WP) [8] since they think the relief is Thutmose I sadly.--Leoboudv (talk) 20:36, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Unfortunately and very belatedly Stan...I now see your point here. It does choke me up a little because there is no book source for that image (and people judge WP by the source and quality of its content). The uploader of that image, Thomas Shaw, was a good contributor to Wiki Ancient Egypt (now mostly retired) and made an honest mistake here but I wonder how many other images were uploaded by less reputable people when Wikipedia was in its infancy. Oh well...such is life. --Leoboudv (talk) 23:54, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Moving an image from German Wikipedia[edit]

Dear Stan, I tried moving this image from German WP to Commons: [9] I gave the source of the picture by Hapfff...but wonder if I have done a copy vio here? I don't know how to type the move to commons sticker in German...and don't have an account on German WP. If my image is salvageable, can you correct the description; if not, please delete it. It is a rare photo of a small and poorly known Egyptian temple in Nubia that is impossible to get on Commons. Please help.

  • PS: Do you know how to move images from non-English WP sites to Commons. I'm just struggling here. --Leoboudv (talk) 22:04, 21 September 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Thanks for your reply Stan. I had typed in the 'move to commons' code for that German WP image and nothing happened. So, I was just lost. Next time, I'll use Commons Helper and type in the name of the existing image from a non-English WP. You're the best. I was scared...that someone would acuse me of violating Hapfff's rights. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 03:59, 22 September 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Austrian stamps[edit]

Hi Stan, I had some discussion about an Austrian stamp deletion with one of the Commons admins who initially answered with what I thought were offhand comments. Because I was unhappy with his answers and did not agree with some of the statements he made in reply I followed up with more detailed questions here but he has ignored me completely, just archiving my post. In my opinion that is very disrespectful, maybe even arrogant, but perhaps you can answer some of the questions I posed. TIA. Ww2censor (talk) 04:41, 2 October 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Move images to Commons while keeping the Metadata[edit]

Dear Stan, How does one move a Wikipedia image to Commons without losing the metadata? Whenever I move images like this Image:Egyptian Dung beetle2008.jpg, the Metadata is lost. Is that a problem? I use Commons helper and save the image on my computer before uploading it onto Commons. I am thinking of moving this image from WP to Commons but wonder if I should preserve the metadata. [10] As you can see, it is an important image. I notice some people have successfully moved images to WP from Commons without losing the Metadata. Any ideas? --Leoboudv (talk) 21:59, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Dear Stan, I finally figured out how to upload it using the Commonhelper bot. I didn't know that having a TUSC account automates the upload process. The image was uploaded without any need to even register on Commons: Image:Khafre.jpg and the Metadata is still there! That was quick. No one mentioned TUSC to me previously. Cheers, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:39, 10 October 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image deletion warning Image:Niebaum-Coppola_winery_window.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

Administrator needing categorising[edit]

It has been voted that all images have to be categorised. You as an adminstrator should be among the first to categorise your images ... and not let it do by others. It's not a big task if one does it during uploading; it's a bigger task doing it afterwards. Havang(nl) (talk) 11:03, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I too drive thousand of km, muddy roads and hills as well - by bike - to get certain of my pictures, that's part of the fun. It really is easier to add categories during uploading. You must realise that there are about 300.000 "media needing categories" and experiences users like you should do the maintenance of their contributions. "Administrator needing categorising" is a parody of "media needing categories" and said with a smile. But the request that you categorise images you upload, is serious. Koi Request[edit]

The shusui in the picture is absolutely amazing! I havn't seen a young one with the white coloration that it has! Can I ask where it was purchased? It doesn't look like a champion or tse koi.

It's not quite as light-colored as the picture makes it look, there's some reflection from the sun. In any case, I bought it from T&T in San Jose (http://www.marineandkoi.com/about_us.htm) around 1996, it was just one of their regular fish. (Was always very happy with the fish I got from them.) I moved from that house years ago and couldn't take the koi with, no idea of their fate. Stan Shebs (talk) 19:39, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

my grandpa and oleo[edit]

I can't remember the reason that you are on my watchlist, sorry for that.

Recently I was re-categorizing several images that the chill bot had categorized from galleries and there is a good chance that I removed your template and knowingly did not replace it. I am frustrated, angry and for whatever reason after so many decades of real life am unable to understand the reason that often I feel I am trying to communicate with beings with less intelligence and ability to grasp somewhat easy ideas as some of the down syndrome children and head injury victims I have worked with in real life, much less the "normal" ones.

I do remember reading in the history of your talk page about when you removed more than 10,000 items from your watchlist so perhaps you are in some ways understanding of my frustration. I try to keep mine under 2000 items.

Here is a story that my brother told me about my grandpa (my dads dad, a tv repairman when I was born and not unlike Mr. Greenjeans in look and manner also one of the first people in this country to produce circuit boards which was just an extension of developing film), a man I had and still have a great deal of respect for. Born in 1910, my mind reels at the changes he saw and experienced. Here is the story that my brother told me. My dads third wife, not my mom, was interested in helping Grandpa keep his health and prolong his life. This would have happened in the mid- to late-1980s, I guess. She suggested that Grandma and Grandpa start to eat more like vegetarians with more fish and poultry and less of the other meats. Here is the point of this re-telling and what Grandpa said: "Oh, so now we are not eating red meat!"

I have almost the same story about this little old man who was eating at the upscale restaurant I was working at. The restaurant had some fancy smancy butter, AAA from Denmark or something like this. It was unsalted and to me had no flavor but upscale dining was not where the bulk of my experience was so my opinion was not wanted nor did I offer it. That little old man though, he was really pissed off when he tried that butter. He claimed it was cheap oleo -- mere margarine. His waitress had lost her patience and both of them had my sympathy. Lucky her for not having gone through the food oddessey (especially all of those versions of imitations of butter) that this old man had! So, I went to the table and maybe even unscrewed the salt shaker top (possibly one of those silly things that used to release the salt grains five at a time), and put enough salt into the butter so that it could be tasted. Stirred it with the "proper" stupid butter knife and invited him to try it again. After he tasted it, he was happy; the waitresses patience was not abused for the remainder of the meal and life went on there, as well as could be expected as it was being run by people who had no idea what diners were there after 5pm when they all evacuated the premises, just like dogs adhering to their schedules....

I suspect that this category/gallery thing is a lot like these food stories for you. I am sorry that I am involved in it and have abused one of your images in my frustration. I have no idea how to find which image it was with the exception that I put it on my watchlist. I am not sorry that I am involved in this to the point where I am making the templates that should make uploads easier and I have often found the recent history of taxonomy that is being included in these templates to be interesting. I am sorry about the aloneness in making them and the frustration that is expressed on innocent images from what very well could be equally frustrated uploaders.

Feel free to correct any of my "I think this is what is going on" feelings especially if they are wrong. -- carol (talk) 04:18, 28 November 2008 (UTC)Reply[reply]

An old nomination[edit]

Perhaps you could review this old deletion request Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Estampillas-Argentina-Encotel.jpg that has been around since October 2008. I asked another admin to look at this but he cannot read the German post. You do and are a philatelist. Cheers Ww2censor (talk) 20:46, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I saw your response. In reality a better image would be better anyway. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 04:56, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
In fact one of the German comments was something like "yeah, the picture isn't great but it does show what a stamp album looks like". A couple times I've taken photos of pages with known-PD stamps, somewhere in my two years of backlog... Stan Shebs (talk) 13:03, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Identification of species[edit]

I am not so good at this. I just ranted about two non-ToL people explaining what researching species is like to the ToL people and I wanted to make certain that at least you know that I know that there is a lot to this plant thing and that I know that. I think that a successful group of people is a group that contains people with many and various talents and the ability to demonstrate that they have these talents they claim to have.

Thank you for having the potential to be in a successful group of people for this plant stuff. Just typing "thank you" seems an understatement to me of the sincerity in which it was written.

Please, do not let me offend you nor to keep you from expressing opinions. -- carol (talk) 20:46, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Stan,

That image has been mentioned as competitor to the this candidate for being the most Valued image within the scope Lomatium parryi. It would be interesting if the two images could undergo a Most valued Review (MVR). However, that requires that your photo fulfills all criteria, but it doesn't, as it is not geocoded. Would you do that please, at adds significant value to the metadata of photos of endemic species?

Also, ZooFari has raised some concerns about the proper identification of this image and others. Maybe you could address that concern as well, i.e., by supplementing the image page with information about which reference has been used for identification and how certain it is. Thank you and happy editing. --Slaunger (talk) 22:13, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Japanese stamp[edit]

Hi Mr,Stan,

The copyright of the image of Japan will allow the stamps are used as government publications. However, some limited by law. Are described in detail in the Japanese Wikipedia entry stamp(切手) in my talk page.

But,animation is of a postage stamp, so the secondary pipeline network creation, and not up, as long as the law not up care.

The following is the law of Japan was helpful

郵便切手類模造等取締法(郵模法)Japanese law fake stamps (Act No. 15 of June 74 a day) or

Hello, Stan Shebs!
Tip: Add categories to your images
Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Austrian stamps[edit]

Did you notice that File:Stamp Austria 1918 15h.jpg and File:Stamp Austria 1922 2000k.jpg both of which you uploaded years ago are tagged for deletion? I am not sure what to do with them other than move them to the en wiki as Austrian stamps are claimed to be copyright for 70 years + the authors death. What would you have me do if anything because they are being used in en:Postage stamps and postal history of Austria. BTW do you have a source for the designers of Austrian stamps or do we claim they are anonymous. Cheers. Ww2censor (talk) 05:16, 10 October 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I also see that several more of your uploads have been tagged as using an obsolete tag. Perhaps you will have to retag these early images. Just ask me if you need help. I suppose I can find them all at User:Stan Shebs/Gallery/Philately. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 18:45, 11 October 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
They're not actually tagged for deletion, it's just that {{PD}} is deprecated now, which is sensible. I think that at the time I just used the 1923 US cutoff, we hadn't thought seriously about international copyright much back then. All my time goes into trying to reduce plant image backlog, so can't spend time on these stamps, but I imagine the producers of these classic designs must be well-known. Looks like Category:Stamps of Austria is quite the ragbag of "licenses", bleah. Stan Shebs (talk) 21:31, 12 October 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Is there anything I can do with the Austrian category to clean it up? I already had one Austrian image, actually this Austro-Hungarian Empire stamp, deleted and am trying to get it back. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 23:57, 12 October 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Googling "Austrian stamp designers" turned up [11], with a bunch of designers' names and dates, including en:Wilhelm Dachauer who designed the 1922 stamps. Further poking doesn't turn up anything more definite than the garbled wording at the top of the stamp category, for all we know Austrian stamps are copyrighted unfree in perpetuity. Carpkazu's stamps[edit]

I reverted Carpkazu's Japanese addition to the Commons:Stamps/Public domain‎ page because there is no evidence to support this claim and have nominated all his post-1959 stamps (22 I hope I have them all) for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests/Images of Carpkazu. You may want to comment. Cheers Ww2censor (talk) 05:16, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Update license tags[edit]

Dear Stan,

You should update the deprecated license tags for this 6 images of stamps below. The old license tag sticks out like a sore thumb:

Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:35, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I added pd-self to a few of your photos. It was mostly older 19th century to 1920's/early 1930's era stamps so they are certainly in the public domain. Like this or this I left the rest for you. Regards, --Leoboudv (talk) 19:59, 17 December 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]
PD-self is strictly only for copyright owners to use, and I'm pretty sure I don't own the copyrights to any stamp! It's remotely possible that a 19th-century stamp is not PD, the rule of thumb is that 70-year pma translates to 120 years or so before we can be sure of PDness due to age. When I uploaded those stamps, I was mistakenly assuming that the USian 1923 cutoff applied everywhere. Stan Shebs (talk) 21:16, 17 December 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. Hi Stan, would you be willing to license your photo's under the {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} or maybe the {{Cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0}}? Ñow it's a bit odd with the migration template. Multichill (talk) 10:26, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Help me out here[edit]

Why would this image File:Air mail letter card 1943.jpg even be tagged as possibly non free, when both the stamp and the air letter are clearly properly licenced and produced by the British government more than 50 years ago? What to do? Ww2censor (talk) 01:35, 8 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Seems like an unusually brainless bot-edit, perhaps it's triggering off a combination of the original upload's mischaracterization and that the image is still flagged as needing review. I'll deflag and delete, see if that mollifies the bot. Stan Shebs (talk) 12:58, 8 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
A user blindly moved a lot of files from enwp to Commons. A bot here at Commons added {{Speedydelete}} to all files which were in the all non-free files category at enwp. Multichill (talk) 14:18, 8 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It was five years ago, I don't remember! Category problem[edit]

I noticed that Category:Covers contains several philatelic sub-categories but it also includes DVD, video game covers, magazine covers and book covers that are miscategorised but I am not sure where to put them or is it more appropriate to rename the category as Category:Philatelic covers or similiar. Thoughts? Ww2censor (talk) 16:08, 10 December 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I got rid of the sub-categories but there are still a few stray record singles and other oddities hanging on that I don't know where to re cat. Ww2censor (talk) 16:26, 10 December 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

file renaming after taxonomy change[edit]

Hi Stan Shebs,
if you don't object, I would like to rename your images File:Glaucium flavum aurantiacum 1.jpg and File:Glaucium flavum aurantiacum 2.jpg to something like File:Glaucium flavum var flavum 3.JPG and File:Glaucium flavum var flavum 4.JPG after they were re-"taxified" (surely not the right term) by Réginald alias Meneerke bloem (see the resp. image talkpages). --Túrelio (talk) 14:02, 24 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Actually I do object, and I wish you hadn't advertised the request to rename - I have a set of personal scripts that I use to keep track of what taxa are done, and to update my galleries from time to time. So when the images are randomly renamed, it messes up my data lists and requires me to do a bunch of editing to catch up. Worse, the person's choice of overly long name with random crud in it will probably break the scripts themselves, and require some recoding. But, if I throw up my hands and stop doing anything with commons altogether, that solves the problem. Stan Shebs (talk) 18:06, 25 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm sorry to hear that, though I don't fully understand what you mean by "advertised the request". In case you don't know already, what has happened was that a new uploader had overwritten your 2 files. His "mentor", Réginald, who is well versed in botany, partly reversed the overwriting (at least the image version) and asked me to rename your files based on his reclassification of the subspecies in your images.[12] Though I have tagged the files for renaming, I intended to do that by myself and to wait for your feedback. Being unsure about the taxonomically correct name, I asked Réginald for the correct name. However, in between an uninvolved user changed the target names and performed the renaming, to my own surprise. Due to the redirects, your original filenames are still valid. If it would help to reduce the resulting problems, I could protect the old filenames against overwriting or deletion. --Túrelio (talk) 19:16, 25 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It's not really the end of the world, but tagging gets the attention of well-meaning editors who assume that a question was decided before the tag was applied. I guess redirection of image filenames is a newfangled feature, didn't know that was possible. :-) Stan Shebs (talk) 20:43, 26 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Though I'm not sure whether your last sentence meant a yes, I've now taken the rare measure to protect (admin-only) the 2 old filenames. --Túrelio (talk) 21:14, 26 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Cercis occidentalis[edit]

I have changed the category and description name of Cercis occidentalis to Cercis canadensis var. texensis. The file names are not altered. Why... to follow:

Uleli (talk) 07:32, 26 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think there's a bit of mixup - only var. texensis is changing species. GRIN's list for Cercis [16] still recognizes both C. canadensis and C. occidentalis, while USDA is calling the western one C. orbiculata. Var. texensis is a Texas/Oklahoma plant, not much chance we're going to see any of those way out here in Nevada. :-) Stan Shebs (talk) 20:38, 26 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You're absolutely correct. The confusion started at the first description in 1850, when elements of both Texas and Californian plants was used in the decriptoin of C. occidentalis. Even though the article by A.Gray is about Texas plants, the name C. occidentalis was later typified by the Californian plant (by M.Hopkins in 1942 [17]).

The Photographer's Barnstar
Hi!

My name is Edoardo Bit, I am an architect and also a “young researcher” of the University of Ferarra (Italy).

I am writing a book on the “green walls technologies” and I have found very interesting a photo in your page. So, I would kindly ask you if I can use it in my book.

Obviously, if you gently decide to grant me the permission, your name (or your nickname) and the link of the picture will be correctly cited in the credits of my publication.

The photo which I would use is: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sedum_oreganum_4.jpg

Thank you very much! I hope you will attend my request… My e-mail is: edoardo.bit@gmail.com

Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture. I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.

Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,  Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

I reviewed the original photos, and they follow my usual habit of label first, then rose pics, so at least at the time I was pretty sure about the matchup, but there are no photos that show both label and plant. Plus, the way that HRG packs in the labels and roses, it's very easy for things to get mixed up, especially when canes get big and start crisscrossing. So quite possibly a mis-ident. If you created this gallery, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
